    Guaranteed Acceptance

Written by Check Financial · 3 min read

    The short answer

Guaranteed acceptance life insurance asks no medical questions, so you can't be turned down because of your health. It usually pays a modest amount and has a waiting period, so it's worth checking whether specialist underwriting can get you fuller cover first.

    Who It's For

Guaranteed acceptance suits people who have tried to get life insurance and struggled. It is often worth considering when:

    • You've been declined or postponed by insurers because of your health.
    • You've been offered cover with premiums or exclusions you can't accept.
    • You mainly want a modest sum for funeral costs or a small gift.

A decline online isn't always the final answer. Online and comparison-site applications often decline automatically. A specialist adviser can present your full medical history to insurers who look at it in detail, which can lead to a very different outcome.

    How It Works

    1. You apply without answering medical questions, as long as you meet the insurer's age and residency rules.
    2. You choose a monthly premium or a cover amount, and both are usually fixed.
    3. There is usually a waiting period, often the first one or two years. If you die from natural causes during it, the policy typically refunds the premiums paid, or a set percentage of them. Accidental death is usually covered in full from the start.
    4. After the waiting period, the full amount is paid.

Most guaranteed acceptance plans in the UK are over 50s life insurance, which has its own page.

    How We Approach It

    1. We look at your full medical history first, and which insurers take a considered view of it.
    2. Where it helps, we ask insurers before you apply, so an application isn't declined on your record without need.
    3. If fully underwritten cover is available, we'll show you what it would cost and what it would cover.
    4. If it isn't, we'll explain guaranteed acceptance options and their limits, so you can decide.

    What It Doesn't Do

    • It doesn't usually give large amounts of cover. It's not designed to clear a mortgage or replace an income.
    • It doesn't pay the full amount during the waiting period, except for accidental death.
    • It isn't always the best value. If you can get fully underwritten cover, even with a higher premium, it often gives more cover for your money.
    • If you stop paying, the cover ends, usually with nothing back.
